Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 has gone official following its presence on gadgets like the Lumia 640. However, it might be limited to just but some devices and not all Lumia.
Even though Microsoft has been busy with Windows 10 for smartphones, up to the point where we already have an ETA for the next preview , it doesn’t mean that the company wasn’t committed to bringing its Update 2
(GDR2) to existing handsets while that happens. Microsoft has made Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 2 official today, but not all the news are positive.
First things first, you’ll need to have or buy either the Lumia 640 or Lumia 640 XL that were recently announced in order to have fun with the update.
Other than that, Microsoft hasn’t provided any launch details for other Windows Phones. One thing that is clear now is that this update won’t be available to all Windows Phones, and at the moment only the likes of the Lumia 735 and Lumia 830 will receive the update.
It’s however hard to understand what
limitations would pull Microsoft from launching the update to flagships like the Lumia 930, but it would make sense to assume that the company wants to focus its resources on Windows 10.
